Turning a Simple Stroll into Energy Medicine
Walking. Such a simple act, yet one of the most profound medicines we have at our disposal. It has the power to clear our heads, move our lymph, and quite literally shift our energy and help return us to our true selves – an antidote to the external chaos that can drain us.
And here’s the magic: when we add a few energy medicine techniques, a touch of ancient wisdom, and a sprinkle of play, walking becomes far more than exercise. It becomes a daily ritual of healing, balance, and joy.
I’ll continue to post from my daily walks with Melvin and Merlin …. It will inspire me and I hope inspire you to build a habit of this daily ritual!
You may have to summon your inner 'Sargent Major' now and again to get going, but it's worth it. Remember Mel Robbin's technique: 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 -1 get up and do it! Sometimes you just have to push yourself ....
I’ve written so much on walking (a few links in this blog), but to summarise some of the key points.
Not every day calls for the same kind of walk. Some days our wise bodies crave a slow, grounding stroll (that was definitely the case for me today); other days we’re ready to stride out like warrior women with arms pumping and hearts racing.
Gentle Stroll: Calms the nervous system, grounds scattered thoughts. Perfect for “restorative days.”
Brisk Walk: Boosts circulation, clears cobwebs, sparks creativity.
Power Walk: Gets the heart singing, floods the body with vitality, and feels like plugging yourself into a universal battery charger.
Your body knows what it needs—let it lead the way.
I’ll sometimes include all 3 in the same walk.
Start with a Spark
Before your first step, give yourself a quick energy tune-up by tapping or massaging the K27 points (just under the collarbone). This little technique that only takes a few seconds, switches your energy flow into the right direction—forward instead of backward—so you’re not walking against your own current. It’s like turning the key in your ignition.
For an extra boost, massage Stomach 36 (just below the knee, outside the shin). Known as the “point of longevity,” it’s like pressing your body’s endurance button. The monks of old swore by it, and so can we—whether our “pilgrimage” is around the block or up the hill.
Tibetan monks walk in rhythm with their breath, each step becoming a prayer. Try this: inhale for four steps, exhale for four steps. You may notice a quiet stillness sneaking in—even as your feet keep moving. This is soul-soothing medicine in motion.
Walking with awareness—heel touching down, rolling through the foot, pushing off with the toes—rebuilds balance and posture. It also stimulates the reflex points in your feet that connect to every organ. Think of it as a full-body massage, step by step.
The ‘balance step’ I posted about (the purvida video) can be done for a minute or two. I’m really finding this useful.
Here's a link to a 'balance' blog I wrote about 'flick' mucles earlier in the year:
Retro Walking: Challenges your brain, builds new pathways, and resets old patterns. Start slowly, safely.
Barefoot Walking: Whenever you can, let your feet kiss the earth. The planet’s energy grounds and recharges you. It’s like plugging into Mother Earth’s socket.
Walking is the perfect time to speak affirmations into your body. Try this rhythm:
· Step right: I am strong.
· Step left: I am balanced.
· Step right: I am wise.
· Step left: I am free.
Your whole body hears it, feels it, and begins to believe it.
If you’ve been following me, you are aware of my favourite …
“Every cell in my body is replenishing with health, vitality, resilience and strength – I’m the best I’ve ever been …. Thank you!
As you walk, let your arms swing across your body in rhythm with your opposite legs. This simple cross-crawl (devised by Donna Eden) strengthens coordination, balances brain hemispheres, and keeps your energy moving joyfully forward and enjoying a ‘cross-over’ pattern that supports self-healing. It may feel playful, even childlike—exactly the point!
Walking with Wonder: Look up, notice the sky, listen for birdsong, what can you smell? Let the world around you nourish your senses.
Walking is so much more than “getting your steps in.”
It is a way to connect to your body and soul, to remind yourself that you are alive, wise, and still very much moving forward.
With every step, you’re balancing your energies, awakening your brain, and recharging your spirit.
So next time you head out the door, remember: you’re not just walking. You’re practicing energy medicine with every stride.
Whether you walk for 5 minutes or 50, it will benefit you now and begin to shape the future you.
I'll be reminding you as I step out with Melvin and Merlin in the Autumn days ahead of us.
One last thoughts from the Crone Zone ..... with the Autumn and Winter winds whipping up - ensure your WIND POINTS are well covered .... click on this link for more information:
This is a lifetime habit that we can each cultivate not just for our well-being right now but also for health in our future years.
