Self healing with colour

Colour has been used for healing across cultures for thousands of years, I was first introduced to it by Donna Eden, founder of the Eden Method, but let’s look at it’s history ….

Ancient Egypt: Temples dedicated to healing often used coloured light passing through stained glass or crystals to bathe patients in specific hues.  I wonder if our stained glass windows in English churches reflect this?

Ayurveda & Traditional Chinese Medicine: Colours were linked to chakras (energy centres) and meridians, each with an associated vibration and healing quality.

19th–20th century Colour Therapy: Pioneers like Dinshah P. Ghadiali developed “Spectro-Chromotherapy”.  This is a system of healing based on the principle that coloured light carries specific vibrational frequencies that influence the body, mind, and emotions. By shining coloured light through filters (gels or glass) onto the body, it was believed one could restore balance, stimulate self-healing, and address physical or emotional disharmony. Dinshah created a structured chart linking each colour to particular organs, systems, and conditions,

Modern Energy Medicine: Colour is considered a vibration that can shift the body’s biofield, support the chakras, and calm the nervous system. Light is energy, and each colour vibrates at a different frequency. When directed toward the body, it can stimulate self-healing, balance, and relaxation.

EVERYDAY colour therapy can be paying attention, or even energy testing, the colours you wear on your body, the blankets on your bed, the cushions on your chairs, the dog blankets, the dog harness ….. colour is such a part of our lives, why not begin to pay attention to the colours that are attracting you.

For example, last year I energy tested to see what colour to paint one wall in my bedroom and a colour, I would NEVER have chosen came up - Bright Fuscia pink. I followed the suggestion and I love the warmth, almost heartfelt, that the colour has added to the room.

I suggest two ways to work with colour:

1 – pure observation and intuition:  close your eyes, take some deep breathes, connect to a stillness within and ask what colour does your body (or your animal companion) NEED at the moment, what would it benefit from either overall or specifically with regard to the physical or mental.

I quite like connecting in this way …. It’s like taking your intuition to the gym for a workout and you know? Nobody’s head is going to fall off if you choose a colour that is not necessarily the best today.  So a great way of flexing that intuitive muscle.

You can go by charts, but that is very generalised or you can energy test to see EXACTLY what colour is going to support your self care today (or your animal companion) – either in choosing a blanket or clothing or exploring the gel and torch technique ……

2 - Energy test. Not sure how? check out my various blogs on self-testing or visit my You Tube channel (Maddie King) .... you'll love it!

What You will Need

A small torch (flashlight) with a broad, even beam (LED or incandescent works).

A set of theatrical lighting gels (coloured film sheets) in primary and healing colours (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, pink, turquoise).  If you go online, often suppliers will mail you a small sample ‘book’  of a huge variety of colours and shades.

Dim overhead lights.

Create a calm atmosphere (soft music, silence, or nature sounds).

Ensure the person or animal is comfortable—lying down, sitting, or resting.

Choose the Colour  - either with intuition or energy testing. Be clear in your mind what your healing intention is: e.g. constipation, breathing, grief/lungs, heart etc.,

I would always recommend you choose ONE aspect of physical or mental healing, what feels the most important to you?  trying to address too many in one session can end up with energetic confusion.

  • Hold the torch 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) away from the skin or fur.

  • Shine on the specific area of concern, or over an energy centre/chakra.

  • Duration: 3–10 minutes per area.

  • For animals, start shorter (1–3 minutes).

  • Talk to the cells in the body. E.g. it is now safe for you to heal …….

  • You can hold the light steady, or trace small hearts or Figure 8s or even circles ….. connect to that stillness within and let your hand guide you.

  • Gently remove the light.

  • Take a few deep breaths together (if with a person).

  • Offer water afterwards (helps “ground” the effect).

  • I like to use an affirmation for a few days after, to help integrate the change and support/deepen the self-healing.

  • You might like to keep the colour on your person - I have various cotton/linen/felt squares that I'll sometimes but in my underwear - to deepen the self-healing vibration.

  • You might also like to keep dosing the colour via my 'lazy persons 24/7 technique' - click on this link.https://www.madisonking.com/post/the-lazy-way-to-distance-heal

Different schools/practitioners have different associations with colours, but here’s a few generalisations to get you started. However, I would always suggest energy testing and letting the body guide you on your choice of colour/shades.

Red 🔴: Stimulating, warming, energising. Supports circulation, fatigue, coldness, low vitality. (Use sparingly for inflamed areas.)

Orange 🟠: Joyful, creative, uplifting. Helps digestion, reproductive energy, depression, shock.

Yellow 🟡: Clears the mind, stimulates intellect, aids stomach/digestive issues, confidence, and energy.

Green 🟢: Balancing, harmonising, calming. Soothes nerves, supports the heart, reduces tension. A “master healer” colour.

Blue 🔵: Cooling, calming, anti-inflammatory. Helps with pain, sore throats, fevers, insomnia, anxiety.

Indigo 🟣: Intuitive, meditative, calming for the mind. Supports sinuses, eyes, relaxation, and sleep.

Violet 🟪: Spiritual, balancing, transmuting. Supports healing at a deep energetic level, grief, and meditation.

Turquoise/Aqua 🌊: Cooling, refreshing, helps immune system, skin, and throat.

Pink 💗: Gentle, soothing, heart-healing. Supports self-love, nurturing, and comfort.

🐾 Special Notes for Animals

Animals are highly sensitive to energy and colour.

Always begin with a short exposure and observe reactions.

Signs the animal likes it: relaxed breathing, lying down, turning body toward the light.

Signs they’ve had enough: restlessness, moving away, looking away.

Safe applications: sore joints, calming anxiety, recovery support, emotional trauma (rescue animals).

⚠️ Safety Notes

  • Do not shine light directly into eyes.

  • Avoid using red over acute inflammation or infection.

  • This is a complementary practice, not a substitute for veterinary or medical care.

  • For chronic or serious conditions, use alongside professional guidance
