There’s something deeply comforting about opening my kitchen cupboard and seeing an array of herbal teas ready to support my well-being. These simple, natural remedies have become a daily ritual, offering warmth, nourishment, and healing. Today, I thought I’d share what’s currently brewing in my cup and why I love these hedgerow helpers.
Fresh from My Garden
Some of my favourite herbs are the ones I grow myself. There’s a special kind of magic in harvesting a few sprigs and steeping them into a soothing infusion. Right now, I’m using:
Thyme – A powerful herb for respiratory health, immunity, and digestion. Perfect for those moments when I need an antibacterial boost. I learnt the true value of this herb when I took groups to North Africa, where it has been used extensively for centuries.
Mint – Cooling, refreshing, and wonderful for digestion. A go-to after meals or when I need a mental lift. Experiment with different types.
Melissa (Lemon Balm) – A calming nervine, easing stress and gently uplifting my mood. Lovely before bed or during a quiet moment in the afternoon. I'm really lucky as this grows like a 'weed' in my garden and I'm never short of it.
Sourced from Reputable Suppliers
While I love growing my own herbs, some require a little help from trusted sources. I always look for organic, high-quality herbs from suppliers like Baldwins to ensure I’m getting the best. Right now, I have:
Mullein – A lung-loving herb, fantastic for soothing the respiratory system and clearing congestion. A must-have during colder months or when I feel my chest needs extra support.
For ‘Lazy Maddie’ – The Trusty Tea Bags!
Let’s be honest—sometimes convenience is key!
I also keep a selection of herbal tea bags for those moments when I just want to grab, brew, and sip. It’s still nourishing and supportive, just with a little less effort. Some of my favourite tea bag options include:
Dandelion – A fantastic detoxifier, supporting liver and kidney function while aiding digestion.
Chamomile – A gentle relaxant, great for reducing stress, aiding sleep, and soothing digestion.
Nettle – A mineral-rich tonic, packed with iron and supporting overall vitality, circulation, and allergies.
Rose – A heart-opening, antioxidant-rich tea that promotes emotional well-being and skin health.
A Personal Story – A Cup of Comfort
One of my fondest memories with herbal tea was during a particularly stressful time. I remember feeling overwhelmed, so I reached for a cup of chamomile and rose tea. As I sipped it slowly, I could feel the tension melting away. It reminded me how powerful these simple herbs can be, offering support exactly when we need it most.
If I want to sleep deeply so I can replenish really well, Melissa and Chamomile is my go to.
Nothing much wakes me up then.
BTW the cup itself is important to me ..... either one of my Mum's fine china delicate little numbers or a more modern class cup or mug - both with a 'cover' to hold in the goodness while it brews.
Tea Pairing Suggestions – What’s Your Mood?
Herbal teas can be beautifully paired with different activities or moods:
Chamomile & a good book – The perfect wind-down companion.
Nettle & a morning walk – A mineral-rich tonic to energize your day.
Dandelion & journaling – A detoxifying sip while reflecting and setting intentions.
Rose & self-care time – A heart-warming tea to sip during a bath or meditation.
A Quick Guide to Dowsing or Energy Testing
Curious about how I choose my tea? I use dowsing or energy testing to see which herb is most supportive at that moment. You can try it too:
Hold two different tea options in your hands.
Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.
Notice which tea feels “lighter” or more inviting—that’s the one your body is calling for! Your body may even lean towards it. Self testing instructions are available on my website blog section if you'd like to explore further.
A Fun Herbal Challenge for You!
I’d love for you to try a new herb this week! Maybe it’s one you haven’t had in a while or something completely new. Pay attention to how it makes you feel and share your experience in the comments here or on my private FB group: MIDLIFE GODDESS
Herbs are such wonderful allies, offering their gifts freely, whether fresh from the garden, carefully sourced from a supplier, or simply plucked from a tea box. No matter how they arrive in my cup, they bring comfort, balance, and a touch of nature’s magic to my day.
